Troop 228 would like to thank Robert Moore for representing his troop, his country and Somers at the Veteran’s Day ceremony on November 11th at Ivandell Cemetery in Somers.
He read a poem by Lieutenant-Colonel John MacCrae’s “In Flanders Fields.” This poem, which was written in 1915 after the Second Battle of Ypres during World War I, encapsulates the sacrifices that veterans, both living and dead, have made in order to keep our nation and many others free and open for Democracy. Robert chose this poem because its message to the living to carry on the fight of those who have passed on by supporting those who still fight to make a better world is a powerful one that is appropriate for this ceremony. Here is a transcription of the poem:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
