The Somers Highway Department prepares for Winter storms – with Troop 228 Boy Scouts. Troop 228 scouts met with the Somers Highway Department on November 7th to learn how the Highway Department helps keep the community safe during Winter storms. How does our Highway Department keep our roads safe during a snow storm or the many Tropical storms that hit our area? The Scout motto is always “Be Prepared”! Nick Devito and Tommy Deagan from our Highway Department live by this rule and Troop 228 Scouts learned firsthand how our Highway department gets the job done. Our scouts learned the complex process in creating the formula for the Brine solution, which is used to prevent the roads from icing up. Mr. Devito explained how this anti-icing process involves placing a layer of brine on the surface of the pavement before a winter storm to prevent snow and ice from freezing to the road. If this formula of sodium chloride and water is not exact, it will not work. In addition, the scouts learned how recycled blacktop is transformed for new material to repair our roads by using a milling process. This process involves heavy machinery and allows our community to take advantage of this eco-friendly process.
Thank you to our Somers Highway Department for keeping our roads safe and educating our Boys Scouts.
